General
The City of Waterloo enacted the Property Maintenance Code, which became effective November 17, 2008. The code establishes minimum acceptable standards in the city which must be maintained in buildings, structures, premises and facilities to protect health, safety and general welfare.
- Whenever there is a change in occupancy of any structure containing a rental dwelling unit or a commercial/industrial unit, an application for an occupancy permit shall be made by the owner and filed with the Building Inspector/Code Administrator.
- The inspection shall be completed within seven (7) working days of application.
- If the premises are not in compliance with this code, the Building Inspector/Code Administrator shall provide applicant with a list of defects that are not in compliance.
- A Certificate of Building Maintenance and Occupancy shall be issued upon compliance.
- If an occupancy permit was previously issued for the structure within a twelve (12) month period prior to the change in occupancy, a new occupancy permit for the change in occupancy shall be required; however, a re-inspection shall not be required.
