Yards of Distinction Contest

Judging will take place July 9th.

Special Census Underway
The City of Waterloo’s Special Census has begun. Special Census enumerators are contacting residents at their homes to conduct interviews. The City is asking to please cooperate by taking the short interview (approx. 10 minutes). Updating Waterloo’s population means the City will see an increase in federal and state revenue to help fund public services. Most of the areas that will be counted in the Special Census include neighborhoods that have seen the most growth. Check the document below for a complete list of those areas. If you live in or near these subdivisions, it is very important that you participate.

Home Alone Program
The City of Waterloo is again sponsoring a Home Alone Child Safety Program at City Hall on May 13th from 9 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. The Waterloo Fire Department, Waterloo Police Department, Monroe County EMA and Monroe County EMS will teach the children what to do in various situations – especially if they are home alone. This program is recommended for children ages 7-13, but all are welcome.

Pinwheel Coloring Contest
The Violence Prevention Center of Southwestern Illinois is sponsoring a coloring contest for Monroe County students from Pre-K to 2nd Grade. The contest is designed to bring attention to Child Abuse Awareness Month, which is held in April. Entries must be received by April 11.

LIFECHURCH Leaf Program
Once again, LIFECHURCH has volunteered to pick up prebagged leaves from residents within Waterloo city limits. The pickup date this year will be December 3rd. You must have your bags of leaves curbside before that morning. This year, they have partnered with students at CCSI and are also offering to rake leaves on Friday, December 2nd (no guarantees, but they will do as many yards as possible). You must call City Hall to be placed on the pick up and/or rake list no later than November 30th.

GLOW is hosting its 5th annual lighted holiday parade. The parade will be Saturday, November 26 at 5:30pm. and will use the same route as the Porta Westfalica Parade. GLOW is still accepting parade entries as well.

The 35th Annual Christmas Walk will be the weekend after Thanksgiving, November 26-27th. Come join us for shopping, carriage rides, holiday music, Santa and more! Pick up a card at any of the participating merchants, get it stamped and turn it in to enter a prize drawing for $1,000 worth of gift certificates! City Hall will have an open house with coffee, hot cocoa and peanut cake from 11am-4pm on Sunday. Also, the Monroe County Bicentennial Committee will have items for sale, commemorating the County’s 200th Anniversary. On Sunday of the Christmas Walk at 3pm, there will be a Bicentennial Time Capsule Dedication at the Courthouse Square.

Ring In The New Year

Waterloo Homecoming
This year’s Homecoming is returning to the original two-day format and will be held August 28th & 29th (please note the dates on the City’s 2015 Calendar of Events are incorrect – the dates changed after the calendar was already printed). The parade will begin at 5pm on Saturday. This year’s theme is “Favorite Movie or Movie Character.” Rides and games begin at 5pm each night and food service starts at 4pm. There is also live music scheduled for both nights, so come on out and have a great time! |

125th Anniversary Time Capsule
As part of last year’s 125th Anniversary celebration, the City of Waterloo is planning to bury a time capsule with mementos from 2013 inside. We are giving the public a chance to include a letter and/or picture to descendants who could be in Waterloo when the time capsule is unveiled, 75 years later during the City’s 200th Anniversary! Due to space constraints, we are limiting each person to one page in a standard Size 10 (4 1/8” x 9 1/2”) envelope, to be dropped off at City Hall. Have fun with the project and leave something really special behind for your family. Let your kids participate too!

If you have a green thumb, we are looking for you! The City of Waterloo is looking to see if there is any community interest in forming a Waterloo Garden Club. Our vision for the Garden Club is to work on various projects around Waterloo to help beautify the city. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please let us know!

Pinwheel Coloring Contest
The Violence Prevention Center of Southwestern Illinois is sponsoring a coloring contest for Monroe County students from Pre-K to 2nd Grade. After the Freeze…
The extreme weather we recently experienced has caused an increase in the number of potholes in Waterloo because of the freeze, thaw process. If you notice one, please let us know and we will fix it as soon as possible.

Changes in Battery and Lightbulb Recycling
The City has unveiled a new Battery Drop Box, located in the parking lot at City Hall. You may now drive up and discard old batteries, which will then be recycled. Lightbulbs will now need to be taken to the Monroe County Recycling Center, located at 901 Illinois Ave. (behind the Annex building) for recycling.
