The planned power outage work has been completed and power is restored.
Thank you for your patience during this important update.
This is an important message from the City of Waterloo.
On Tuesday, December 23rd, weather permitting – there will be a planned partial City wide power outage for required work in preparation for installing the new turbine generator at the Waterloo Power Plant. Out of abundance of safety for the contractor, our City team, residents, and businesses this power outage will occur at approximately 1:00 p.m. and could last for 2-3 hours.
Date: Tuesday, December 23rd
Time: Beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Duration: Approximately 2-3 hours
This outage is necessary to complete installation of the new turbine generator and is not part of routine maintenance. We recognize that the date and time may not be ideal and we sincerely appreciate residents’ patience and understanding.
The date and time were selected only after careful consideration of several important factors, including worker and public safety, forecasted temperatures, available daylight, crew availability, construction deadlines, and minimizing impacts to local schools, as students will already be out of school during this time.
Completing and connecting the new turbine generator is a critical step in strengthening the City’s electric system and improving overall reliability. This project directly helps reduce the likelihood and duration of future outages, such as the severe weather event on March 15, 2025. During that storm, the City was able to restore power to residents and businesses relatively quickly, while some surrounding communities experienced outages lasting one to two days.
Impacted Areas: Addresses that are outlined in orange will be included in the power outage. See interactive map link: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1YoQ9myC_IzUpkTxeyaqeu6kpyWYjkic&usp=sharing
